html5 display in IE9

Had a few issues with IE9 correctly displaying any html5 elements. And yes, IE9 supports html5. A quick visit to W3C validator brought up this error “Comments seen before doctype. Internet Explorer will go into the quirks mode.” Removing a seemingly harmless comment like <!– Home template –> suddenly restored the page.
