Mail disorder – (questions) – part 2
I got a little further with the checkpw package which specifically looks for passwords in the ~/Maildir/.password file. So I know this works. I also know that I can Telnet to port 143 of the mailserver (don’t try it, it’s disabled), but usefully “update-inetd –enable telnet” is a useful command line trick which can be undone with –disable at any time.
The problem seems to be with enabling SSL and bincimap as I’m now getting an unknown username / password message from squirrelmail rather than the 111 of yesterday.
Usefully I spoke with a Lycos support person yesterday and generally sang praises for the VDS system this is hosted on. In return he commented on what a pain it was installing the OS and system before being able to host sites, etc. Well hosting is fine, as is getting stats – see www.statcounter.com for a means of retrieving live stats. If installing Qmail, Webmail, Squirrelmail, etc had been as straightforward.
There will be more tomorrow. In the meantime, comment or email if you can help.
