Samba/Squid
Have made a couple of small breakthroughs with both Samba and Squid tonight. Am sharing files on Linux server from Windows XP machine.
First with Squid, getting it started was sorted out by changing the DNS host in Network to be the IP address of the server. This meant the service could be started. Am still getting permission errors when trying to use the proxy but this should be sorted using Nichewares Squid Documentation.
Secondly Samba, which was not installed, so having installed this from CD-ROM I got it started and was able to connect on localhost:901 However, accessing the share from Windows is proving a little more difficult. Firstly because running smbclient -L with the client host IP causes a port 139 problem on the Windows machine with the firewall. This needs to be addressed.
What has helped is being able to use Webmin between the two machines.
One final Samba note: have tried using net use z: \\hostname\share but get error 53 from cmd prompt saying network path was not found, despite being prompted for a username and password.
